Martin chats about Gear

Ambersphere Solutions recently sat down with LD Martin Brennan to discuss his use of Ayrton fixtures and grandMA3 for Limp Bizkit's Loserville tour.
How many Ayrton fixtures were used?
Martin: We have 18 x Eurus Profile S, and 12 x Cobras.
Was there anything about the fixtures you particularly liked?
Martin: The Eurus are nicely compact, with all of the features that you could wish for. The Cobras are bright, of course, and they do what they say on the tin. My Lampies like them cos they are solidly built, and (so far) have been pretty reliable.
What did you like the most about lighting this particular show?
Martin: Good question. I got this gig at about five days’ notice when the band’s regular LD had to pull out for personal reasons, so it has been a baptism of fire, but I love the spontaneity of the show; Fred can call out just about any song that the band knows, so that keeps it interesting! It is a busking show, so every night is different to some extent, but it is live, loud and in your face!
Can you explain any parts of the show that you think worked really well.
Martin: The interaction between the band- especially Fred- and the audience. The audience matters the world to Fred and he is brilliant at taking them with him during the evening, and I just have to follow that. The audience lights are used A LOT! They do a version of The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes”, which is the one song I have programmed specifically cos its the one downbeat number of the night. It’s only one look, but it is slightly different from the rest of the evening.

What were your inspirations when lighting the show?
Martin: Keeping in work!!! No, Fred and I were in fairly regular contact before the tour started and the information that he gave, as well as me talking to others to get the vibe, and that gave me the confidence to take a showfile I had never seen before, adapt it slightly to my style, and run with it. Unlike most of my other artists where the showfiles are pretty structured, the freeform flow of this is refreshing.
What particular console was used?
Martin: We are using an MA3 Full size with tracking back up.
Who else was involved?
Martin: The LD who isn’t with us is Justin Wade. My lovely lampies are Tom Bennett and Tom Westerman. The suppliers are Siyan.
