Martin An Introduction

Here’s a little bit about me, and how I ended up in the wonderful world of lighting design.

Here’s a little bit about me, and how I ended up in the wonderful world of lighting design.

My parents are (and were) Australian, one a stage manager, the other an actor. I suppose you could say theatrics and a fear of rain are in the blood. I started learning at a school that counted Alan Rickman, Mel Smith and Hugh Grant as alumni, and trained more formally at the Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff, where I learned my stage craft, lit gigs and honed my love of curry!

Lighting design and operation are my favourite parts of the experiences I’ve had in the business. I’ve been a lampy, crew chief, operator, spark and more, and love them all, but there’s nothing like the satisfaction you get being part of the process to dictate the look of a band for a world tour or an album cycle.

I still love the business, even at my advancing age (think, 40, plus VAT and taxes), and still get the buzz when the houselights go down, and the roar of the crowd raises the hairs on your arms.
